TIMOTHY HAY NEAR ME

Timothy Hay is an exceptional roughage and fiber source. It is a late-maturing bunchgrass with a relatively low protein and high fiber content. The long stem and consistent quality allows good consumption and provides good conditioning for livestock. Timothy forms a long bulb as it grows which stores carbohydrates. The leaves are smooth and hairless, and seeds are very small and can number up to three million seeds per kilogram.

Timothy grass, native to Japan’s Hokkaido region, was involuntarily introduced to North America by the first settlers. A farmer named Timothy Hanson introduced it to the southern United States in the early 18th century and began promoting its cultivation as hay around 1720. The grass has carried his name ever since and is used for feeding dairy and beef cattle, and is particularly popular in Asian horse racing markets.

Timothy is highly recommended for horses confined to a stable because it offers more chewing time. Feeding on Timothy can help satisfy your horse’s natural urge to chew and graze when they are confined to stalls for long periods of time. While other feeds such as Alfalfa hay can meet energy requirements of horses in high levels of products, low nutritional concentrations of Timothy are ideal for many life stages.
