SUDAN GRASS

Sudan grass serves as an excellent pasture or hay crop, with its 3 to 5′ height and slender (<1/2 inch), leafy stems. These characteristics make it well suited for pasture, dry hay, or silage. Forage sorghum was developed from grain sorghum, and this crop is suitable for silage, but not dry hay production.

Description

SUDAN GRASS FOR HAY

Sudan grass hay is a type of hay that is ideal for cows that need to gain weight quickly. This hay is high in protein and digestible fiber, making it an excellent source of energy for beef production. Sorghum sudan hay is also an excellent option for cattle with limited access to fresh pasture.

Sorghum sudan is a fast-growing, productive forage grass commonly used as livestock feed (for grazing or to make hay or silage) and as a cover crop. Sundangrass is tall (3–8 feet or 0.9–2.4 meters) with slender stems and large leaves.

At Bailey farms, we strive to provide the dairy, livestock, and forage producer with the best seed genetics and the latest management information to help them improve the profitability of their operation.

Hay Sorghum Sudan – 9% CP 68% NDF

Sorghum Sudan is a grass hybrid most often used for hay and pasture. Horses should not graze on sorghum Sudan grass as they may develop a colic-like condition known as Cystitis Syndrome from chronic ingestion of cyanide.

Sorghum Sudan is a hybrid-derived species of grass raised for forage and grain, native to tropical and subtropical regions of Eastern Africa. The plant is cultivated in Southern Europe, South America, Central America, North America and Southern Asia, for forage or as a cover crop.

Uses Of Sudan Grass

Sudan grass is native to Sudan. It is cultivated and naturalized widely in the United States, but is most common in the southern states. Although common to the southern states, it is also grown from southern Texas to Minnesota and North Dakota in the central grassland regions. Sudan only develops fibrous roots and does not become a noxious weed. As seedlings, virtually all species of sorghum resemble one another and are frequently confused with young corn plants. The sorghum species are used for forage, hay, silage, and grain.
